The Apple Watch is water resistant, but not waterproof!

Last updated on January 7, 2017 By Andrei Klein Leave a Comment

At least that’s what Apple states, in the official description of their first wearable. To be more specific, this means that the Apple Watch isn’t designed for being used underwater, but it can deal with water in some normal situations.

…but it apparently has some secret powers!

For example, if it starts raining and you need to check some notifications, there’s no need to worry, as the smartwatch can take some raindrops, thanks to the IPX7 certification. It’s a totally different thing than the IP67, seen on a few smartphones, meaning that it’s not designed for dunking it in a pool, for example.

Still, some guys took the Apple Watch for a swim and it resisted heroically, as you can see in this video, discovered by the guys from Digital Trends.

Apparently, the smartwatch has no problem working while being used in the shower, but everything changes if it’s put under water. Like expected, the touchscreen encounters difficulties in being used, but the digital crown still works, allowing you to zoom on an app. Also, after taking the Apple Watch out from the water, it resumes functioning normally.

Don’t try this at home, though!

So, ladies and gentlemen, despite Apple’s position, it seems that their wearable is much more water resistant than we thought. Also, this is a big plus when compared to the rest of its Android Wear-based competitors, as none of them can deal with water like this. But Pebble can do it!

Even after seeing this video, we strongly advise you to avoid doing the same thing with your Apple Watch. If you don’t want to risk damaging a $350+ device, of course. Just keep in mind that if you accidentaly drop it in water, it will be safe and sound!
