It all started with a rumor, but today it finally happened. Tag Heuer Connected Watch, the Swiss manufacturer’s first wearable, was unveiled today. It’s the result of a collaboration with Intel and Google, running the latter’s operating system for wearables, Android Wear.
A modern interpretation of a classic
Basically, we can call it the first real smartwatch from a Swiss luxury watchmaker, which should satisfy that category of users who wanted to be permanently connected, but also wanted a high-end timepiece around their wrists.
According to Bloomberg, the Tag Heuer Connected Watch is based on one of the manufacturer’s classic models, the Carrera 1963. The same source mentions that some of the most distinctive design elements are the watch’s profile and the long lugs, which Tag Heuer fans will immediately spot.
Even though it’s presented as ‘made in Switzerland’, the only parts actually made in the company’s home country are the buckle and case, as the internals are designed by Intel.
Can we call it high end? Yeah, why not?!
Measuring 46.2mm across and 12.8mm in thickness, this titanium-made watch is relatively light. Besides the 1.5″ round LTPS LCD display, with a resolution of 360 x 260 pixels and a density of 240ppi, the Tag Heuer Connected Watch is powered by a 1.6 GHz dual-core Intel CPU, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory.
In terms of sensors, it has a gyroscope, microphone, tilt detection sensor and a haptic engine. As for the connectivity suite, it’s represented by Bluetooth 4.1 and 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.
The Tag Heuer Connected Watch will work with both iOS (8.2 and above) and, of course, Android (4.3 and above). It’s IP67 certified, so it can deal with water and dust. Still, avoid taking it for a swim. Believe us, it’s better.
Finally, the price tag is $1500, making it one of the most expensive smartwatches we’ve ever seen. What do you think about it? Is it worth the money?
