How to protect your android device from the WebView bug

Last updated on January 7, 2017 By Adity Bera Leave a Comment

If you are using an android device, then you should take control of the WebView bug as it could help a hacker to access your phone. The solution for this bug is not patched by Google, so you need to take control of it by your own. Well, some steps are there that you can follow to fix this issue.

Let me give a clear idea about the WebView bug first. WebView is a part of tech that is used to render web pages in android devices running 4.3 or lower OS. It’s a bug that a hacker can easily exploit to take control of your android phone. Devices running android 4.4 and higher (KitKat and Lollipop) are not affected by this bug because the WebView’s Webkit rendering engine was altered with Blink, a Chromium-based version.

A lot of people still use android device running android 4.3 and lower as based on the calculation as of January 5. 60.9 percent people use devices running android 4.3 and lower, and 39.1 percent people use phones or tablets running android 5.0 Lollipop and 4.4 KitKat.

The good news is that the problem can be fixed by yourself by updating your phone to android 5.0 Lollipop or 4.4 KitKat.

Protect your phone against the WebView bug

You will receive OTA updates if the phone has not been rooted. If you have ignored the update till today, now update it. Besides protecting, it will also add new features.

To check the update, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update/Software Update. If you see update is available, then download it and install. But make sure that the battery has atleast 50% charge and the wifi is on.

After opening the Software if you get message “the file…. does not exist”, then your phone is rooted. In such case, you have to download the updates manually and install it.
