Nowadays tablets and phones are capable little devices. They are able to surf the web, run games, and send images and video at blazing fast speeds. However, there speed, software, and slim design comes at a price—run time.
Perhaps android is the best example for illustrating decreased run time. The phones (usually) have batteries capable of storing more milliamp hours than that of their main competitor, Apple’s iPhone and IPad. However, there run time is comparable to the battery life of Apple products. Why? Android is capable of multitasking and running programs in the background. This uses extra processing power, and thus battery life.
That is not to say, however, that Apple products have decent run times. As stated earlier, their phones and tablets run off of batteries with less milliamp hours than typical android phones. In the end, battery life is all the same, more or less. Still, there are a few quick and easy ways to increase the battery life on any phone or tablet.
Android users should look into installing Advanced Task Killer, a free little app that can significantly increase a phone’s runtime. The thing is whenever an android phone starts, it opens and runs al of the installed apps. Some need to be run, such as email and the clock. However, there is no need to run Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, and Temple Run at the same time. Simply install this app and click it when you are finished with using an app. Also use it when you first start-up your phone and see the Advanced Task Killer logo in the top bar—this means that all of the phone’s apps were turned on.
Other tricks for Android users is to use the features bar. Leave power saving mode on, keep Bluetooth off when it is not needed, and don’t try to stream WIFI unless if you need to. Following the above can help increase battery life significantly!
Apple users don’t need to install an App Killer. Their phone or tablet’s software can limit which apps “refresh” in the background. It is suggested that you stop all unneeded apps from “refreshing” (updating) in the background. To stop apps from updating without your permission, go to the general setting on your phone and click on Background App Refresh. You can manage all apps at once or individually. Similarly, it is recommended that Apple users go to the App store and limit app updates to WIFI only. This should save on mobile data usage and help increase battery life while on the go.
A quick tip for any phone or tablet is to only recharge when the phone or tablet needs it. Leaving a fully charged phone or tablet in its charger will decrease the longevity of your battery due to a constant use/recharge loop. As this ages your battery, the phone or tablet will be unable to hold power for as long as it used to. The battery may even begin to lose charge when it is not in use. If this starts to happen be sure to get a new battery for safety and better run time!
