Apple’s iPhone home button adds a joystick

This new multifunctional home button adds a spring which will allow the button to pop up and be used as a joystick. The patent was published on Thursday (January 15) by the USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office). From that we got to know that the button can be used in several purposes such as to control gameplay, to navigate Internet Explorer and word processing applications. You need to press the home button down in order to bring it in joystick mode and then click it to use as a joystick.

Currently, the home button of iPhone has 3 functions, using the button you can wake the phone on standby, you can go back to the home screen and with its inbuilt Touch ID fingerprint scanner unlock the phone. The Touch ID feature was introduced by Apple in its iPhone 5s in 2013. Both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus also have this button.

Apple most probably will not include this multifunctional home button on any iPhones that will be released on the near future because Apple has a long term plan for this excellent feature. AuthenTec, Apple’s subsidiary provided the technology for TouchID to the manufacturer and this TouchID adds touch based navigation. This company also has optical joystick emulation technologies.
